Drive-by Download

Malware delivered to a visitor simply by loading a compromised or malicious page, without any explicit user action.

What it is

A drive-by download installs malicious code as a side effect of loading a page, typically via a browser/plugin exploit chain leading to a loader. The compromised page may be the original site or a downstream third-party iframe/script. Detection is difficult with passive crawlers because the exploit often fires only for the right user-agent, geography, or session cookie.

Real-world examples

  • Compromised CMS plugins redirecting to RIG EK.
  • Malvertising chains delivering SocGholish via fake browser-update pages.

How ExploitShield detects it

The scanner rotates user agents, geographies, and viewport profiles on every run and re-renders every 5 minutes — so conditional drive-by attacks are observed rather than missed.
